Sri Jagadguru Veerasimhasana Suttur Math with a long history of more than one thousand years is a multi-dimensional institution located in Suttur, Mysore district. The educational wing of the Math JSS Mahavidyapeetha, Mysuru was established in the year 1954 by His Holiness Jagadguru Dr. Sri Shivarathri Rajendra Mahaswamiji, the 23rd pontiff.
It was the result of the outstanding efforts of His Holiness Jagadguru Dr Sri Shivaratri Rajendra Mahaswamiji, the 23rd pontiff of Sri Suttur Math that the JSS Mahavidyapeetha and other institutions came into existence. Six decades ago, JSS was a pioneer in the field of education, now a champion, running more than 320 institutions and fulfilling the educational needs of 1,00,000 students in India and abroad.
The journey of JSS Mahavidyapeetha can be cited since the establishment of a small hostel in 1928 to cater to the residential needs of indigent students pursuing higher education in Mysuru. In 1954, His Holiness Jagadguru Dr Sri Shivaratri Rajendra Mahaswamiji founded Jagadguru Shri Shivarathreeshwara Mahavidyapeetha and registered it under the Societies Registration Act 1960.
Today, JSSMVP has institutions stretching from kindergarten to post-graduate and post-doctoral research centres under its roof. JSSMVP has given due importance to the overall development of society by promoting healthcare, preserving culture, and empowering rural folk. A long and healthy life, education, and a decent standard of living for all, development of human resources, is the cardinal principle on which JSS Mahavidyapeetha has been working since 1954.
Jagadguru Sri Veerasimhasana Mahasamsthana Math, popularly known as Sri Suttur Math, is an establishment that promotes social and economic integrity based on its spiritual values and ideals. The influence of the Srimath and its activities has spread beyond the small village of Suttur, within and beyond the boundaries of Karnataka and to the distant shores of foreign countries. The lineage of the Srimath brings to light the unwavering societal concern of its pontiffs. The inscriptional evidence supports the establishment of Jagadguru Sri Veerasimhasana Mahasamsthana Math at Suttur Srikshethra during the reign of the Chola kingdom in the 10th Century CE. The luminous tradition handed down through centuries indicates that HH Adi Jagadguru Sri Shivarathreeshwara Shivayogi Mahaswamiji is the founder of Sri Suttur Math. If the founding of the Srimath was incidental for establishing harmony and peace between the two warring factions of the region by its founder, the pontiffs who succeeded saw the purpose and promoted the overall development of society.
